Texas Power Outages Right Now

How many Texans are without power right now, in which counties, and whether the ERCOT grid is under strain. Customer counts come from the utilities’ own outage maps and refresh every 15 minutes. Grid demand comes from the U.S. Energy Information Administration, and weather alerts from the National Weather Service.

Latest outage and grid news

Who to call when your power goes out

In most of Texas the company that sends your bill (TXU, Reliant, Gexa and other retail providers) does not fix outages. Repairs are handled by the utility that owns the poles and wires in your area. Report the outage to that utility:

  • Oncor: Dallas–Fort Worth, much of North, Central and West Texas.
  • CenterPoint Energy: the Houston area.
  • AEP Texas: Corpus Christi, the Rio Grande Valley, Laredo and parts of West Texas.
  • TNMP: scattered areas including Galveston County and parts of North and West Texas.
  • Entergy Texas: Southeast Texas around Beaumont, outside ERCOT.
  • Austin Energy, CPS Energy (San Antonio), municipal utilities and electric co-ops run their own outage lines.

What ERCOT warnings mean

ERCOT runs the grid for about 90 percent of the state’s electric load. When supply gets tight it first asks the public to conserve. If reserves keep falling it declares an Energy Emergency Alert (EEA) in up to three levels. At EEA level 3 it can order utilities to rotate outages so the whole grid does not fail. Most outages, though, are local: storms, heat, ice and equipment failures on the distribution lines in a neighborhood.

About this data

Totals cover only the utilities listed in the table above, which serve roughly 5.3 million Texas customers. A “customer” is one electric meter, so the number of people affected is higher. Utilities update their maps on their own schedule and estimated restoration times change often. For your own address, always check your utility’s map.
