About American Blackout

American Blackout is an independent site that tracks power outages and electric grid conditions in the United States, region by region. We started with Texas and Puerto Rico, two places where the grid makes news often, and plan to add more states.

Where the numbers come from

  • Customers without power: the public outage maps of each listed utility, read every 15 minutes. We keep the history so you can see how an event developed.
  • Grid demand: the U.S. Energy Information Administration’s Hourly Electric Grid Monitor.
  • Weather alerts: the National Weather Service. We show only alert types that commonly cause outages, such as hurricanes, ice storms, severe thunderstorms and extreme heat.
  • Headlines: regional news outlets and utilities. We show the headline and link to the original story; we do not copy articles.

Utility maps are not always complete or current, and restoration estimates change. For your own address, always check your utility directly.
