Latest outage and grid news

Who runs Puerto Rico’s grid

  • LUMA Energy operates the transmission and distribution system: the lines, substations and customer service. Report outages to LUMA through MiLUMA or the LUMA website.
  • Genera PR has operated the government-owned power plants of the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority (PREPA, or AEE in Spanish) since 2023.
  • The Puerto Rico Energy Bureau (Negociado de Energía) regulates both and approves rates.

What “relevos de carga” means

A relevo de carga is load shedding: when power plants cannot produce enough electricity for demand, LUMA cuts service to groups of circuits in rotation to keep the whole system from collapsing. These cuts usually last from one to a few hours and are most common on hot evenings, when demand peaks and generating units are out for repairs.

About this data

LUMA’s outage map does not publish data in a form we can read automatically, so live customer counts are not shown here yet. Weather alerts come from the National Weather Service office in San Juan. For the status of your own address, use LUMA’s official tools.
