President-elect Donald Trump is expected to name Florida Senator Marco Rubio as his Secretary of State. The New York Times reported, citing “three people who are familiar with his thinking on [Trump’s],” that Trump appeared to have chosen Rubio for the position. The President-elect has just begun selecting his national security and foreign policy team. The New York Times’ sources also said that Trump could change his mind. He had considered the Florida senator as his running partner before he selected JD Vance.
Marco is a Cuban American politician. He was previously a Florida House of Representatives member for eight years. He was elected as a senator in 2010.

According to his website, Marco Rubio was born to Cuban immigrant parents in May 1971 in Miami, Florida. His father was a bartender for a local banquet while his mother worked as housekeeping at a nearby hotel. The Senator attributes his interest in public services to his grandfather who was a Cuban communist during the time. Rubio was a West Miami city commissioner when he began his career as a public official. He is currently serving on the Senate’s Foreign Relations Committee and the Senate Intelligence Committee.
The senator is known for his strong foreign policy, especially in relation to China, Cuba, and Iran. His policies include reforming the Veteran Health Administration and expanding tax credits to working families. While the Lugar Center ranked him as one of the most bipartisan senators, he was also ranked as the most effective Republican by the Center for Effective Lawmaking.
Marco Rubio competed against Donald Trump during the 2016 Republican primaries. Trump called Rubio “Little Marco” at the time while Rubio commented on Trump’s masculinity. Rubio dropped out of the presidential race after losing the primaries.
Rubio told CNN in May 2016 that he apologized to his opponent and that it was not who he was or what he stood for. Rubio supported Trump during the 2024 US Elections. He posted clips from the same interview to his official X account. Marco Rubio, a Miami-native, met his wife Jeanette through mutual friends, according to his website. They married in 1998 and have four children, Amanda, Daniella, Anthony, and Dominick.
Neither Trump nor Rubio have publicly reacted to the reports. The reports have not been publicly addressed by either Trump or Rubio.
